SugarSync Overview
SugarSync is an amazing piece of software that combines a desktop/mobile application with a web application to sync information between multiple devices. Installation is relatively seemless, and easy enough for the most basic geek to get through. Follow the easy setup instructions and... just like that, your files are synced. You don't have to sync your whole computer of course. You get the option to back what ever directories you wish. This kind of customization ability makes SugarSync top notch, and very intuitive. Information can be synced between any number of PCs (desktops or laptops), Macs, and mobile phones... and the best part is that it's easy! Online Backup
Now, I'm sure there are some of you out there that have used other "online backup or storage" products before, but let me assure you, SugarSync is in a league of its own. SugarSync will be Your All-in-One Sync, Backup and Remote Access Solution. After following the instructions to setup your initial online backup, SugarSync automatically updates any changes to the synced directories. Changed just ONE word in a file? Guess what, SugarSync got it. Rearranged your whole photo album? SugarSync got that too. SugarSync is a quiet workhorse, constantly monitoring your synced directories, and taking care of the hard work for you. The thing we loved the most about SugarSync here at The GEEK Reports is that, beyond the initial backup process, you never have to upload again. We use it constantly here at TGR, as Tobeus and I actually live quite a distance from each other. Truth be told, we probably see each other face-to-face once a month, if that. However, with SugarSync and our Blackberries, we are never out of reach as far as our TGR work goes. If Tobeus adds a file to our SugarSync directories, I have it, on my Blackberry, on my laptop, and on my desktop. It's just there... every time... all the time. How much easier can it get? To kick it up another notch, all syncing and backups are transferred via SSL, and then stored using 128bit AES encryption.
Initially, one of the only problems I could find about SugarSync is that it was too good. When a file is updated or changed, SugarSync grabs it right away and ensures that the same file changes are present across all machines. The original version became toast. However, after playing around with SugarSync a little bit more, I found a feature called the Web Archive. This allows me to save a version of a file before changes are made in my secure online backup. You just have to drag-and-drop the file into the Web Archive folder, and there you go. Yet another win for SugarSync!
SugarSync also makes it just as easy to recover your online backups in case you need it. If you happen to go through a total data loss on your computer, or if you just want the same data on a second computer... it's just as easy to download your information from SugarSync's online server back to your computer... getting you back up in no time at all!
Multi-Device Sync
As mentioned before, SugarSync makes it easy and seamless to keep all of your information synced between multiple computers and your mobile devices. Files are automatically updated to each device that you have SugarSync installed on, with nothing more for you to do. But, SugarSync takes it just a couple of steps further:
Offline Sync: If one of your devices happens to be off, SugarSync's Web Application and Online Backup will sync any changes made from a live device immediately, and quickly send that information to your device once it's turned back on and online.
Lite Sync: In case you are worried about storage spaces on any of your synced devices... you can choose to use the Lite Sync option. With this option, changes to any synced directories won't automatically download to a Lite Sync machine... keeping you in control of valuable storage space on that machine. Yet another stellar feature from SugarSync! It seems these guys have thought of just about everything!
Personal Website: What if you don't have any of your synced devices on you, but you found a file you need to get to your computer fast. Don't worry. As a user, you'll be given your own personal website for SugarSync, containing all of your synced files online and accessible through any web browser. Just go to your personal website (www.username.sugarsync.com) and upload any file you need to have access to later... and as you know by now, the magic of SugarSync will take care of the rest!
Sync Your Camera Phone: As an added bonus, download SugarSync for your camera phone, and any pictures you take are automatically synced to your beautiful online photo gallery. Makes sharing important snapshots through multiple devices... well, a snap!
